Fire Engineering and Smoke Management

Overview

Pacific Fair was a $470 million refurbishment and expansion project completed in 2016. Works included 120 new retail stores, a mall expansion, a two level David Jones store, an enlarged and relocated Target, a relocated Coles, a new Woolworths and Big W. An outdoor leisure and entertainment precinct, known as the ‘Resort Area’was also constructed.

Fire Check Consultants (FCC) were involved throughout the design, approval and construction process to help deliver fire safety compliance and certification for the development. This included preparing the fire engineering brief and report.

To permit flexibility in building design with the benefit of construction cost savings, FCC developed fire engineering solutions for building fire resistive levels, construction of fire-isolated passageways, and the use of glazing in fire separation and compartmentation.

CFD fire and smoke modelling was used to ensure the egress and smoke exhaust design for the shopping centre provided the required safety levels for evacuees and intervening fire brigade.
