Westfield Chermside Stage 6 wasa $355 million extension and refurbishment project completed in 2017. It comprised of creating an additional 33,000 m² of retail space. This included 95 new retail stores, a gallery atrium mall, a child minding centre, and a new leisure and outdoor dining precinct, set in a resort-style alfresco landscape.
Fire Check Consultants (FCC) were involved throughout the design, approval and construction process. FCC were engaged to provide performance based design solutions for occupant egress, smoke hazard management, building fire resistive levels, and construction of fire-isolated passageways.
These performance solutions permit building flexibility and construction cost savings, whilst still providing the required safety levels for evacuating occupants and intervening fire brigade. The life safety performance of the mechanical smoke exhaust systems was validated through the use CFD fire and smoke modelling.
